WHY YOU FEEL SLEEPY ONCE YOU START READING

Have you ever wondered why you feel sleepy once you start reading?  And has been looking for possible solutions? Every WAEC, NECO or JAMB candidate preparing for examination wants to study for hours without losing concentration. Well, the urge to sleep comes in for reasons.

The following are the reasons that make you fall asleep immediately you start reading:

  1. You are too tired
  2. The book you are reading is not interesting
  3. You don’t have the appetite to read.
  4. reading immediately after eating
  5. You didn’t get enough sleep
  6. You are sick
  7. Lying down while reading

 YOU ARE TIRED:

One reason that makes you feel sleepy once you open a book to read is that you are forcing yourself to read even while you are too tired. Reading is supposed to be enjoyed and interesting and not endured. You can’t tell me that after a whole lot of work and you been stressed out, you are going to sit down with a book on your hand and expect will expect to understand what you are about to read, that’s not possible.

Every student who wants to read should always have enough rest to avoid feeling dizzy. You can’t study with a tired and weak brain. Make sure you have enough sleep before studying

THE BOOK IS NOT ENGAGING:

You know some books are very boring and when once you open them, your eyes will start closing. You know that’s hard for you right? But I tell you that the best time to read such boring books is when you are active.

 

YOU DON’T HAVE THE APPETITE TO READ:

Like some people will always say; I don’t like what I hate, you know you don’t enjoy what you hate, having a good appetite helps makes reading interesting.  If you don’t have a good appetite, you won’t enjoy your reading until you develop an appetite for it.

 YOU READ IMMEDIATELY AFTER EATING:

It is normal to feel little sleepy after eating while your food digests, but you don’t start reading immediately; you need to give your body some time to rest before you start reading so you will have enough energy. You need to have a relaxed mind before reading.

Take a glass of water before a meal. Water increases the amount of blood volume in a person’s body so that their blood pressure is less likely to drop.

Choose foods that don’t take too long to digest; such foods include whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. High-sugar foods like white bread, white rice, and potatoes digest rapidly and increase the risks for postprandial hypotension.

Instead of taking a few large meals, eat several small meals in a day. It helps to reduce dizziness. Avoid foods like alcohol and high sodium foods.

YOU DIDN’T GET ENOUGH SLEEP:

This is for those who love reading at night. I think it is better to have at least a good sleep so you will be able to study at night.

Anytime you have plans to study, make sure you get a little sleep before opening your book; else, you are going to feel dizzy once you start to read.

YOU ARE SICK:

It’s normal to feel dizzy while you are treating Malaria. So it’s ok, but all you need is to take drugs and eat very well. In a short time, you will be ok.

LYING DOWN WHILE READING:

There is no way you will lie down to read without falling sleepy. If you want to read, you should make use of a table and chair that makes you feel comfortable for reading instead of lying down. It is good to study in a comfortable environment, but that should not mean you have to lie down while reading. Studying while lying down sends a signal to your brain that it is time to sleep. Know the time to read and the time to study.

Another thing that makes one feel sleepy while reading is staying in a very quiet environment. Studying in a very quiet environment can make your studying boring after reading for some time and can make you feel even sleepy.  It is ok to study under the Air-Conditioner but you will definitely feel sleepy when reading on your bed.

One more thing is that you should never mix social networks with your reading. After spending many hours chatting online, it will be hard to engage in active reading. That’s because your brain has already adapted to the fun part of life. Instead, you should read before going online to do whatever you want to do

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO WHEN YOU FEEL SLEEPY WHILE READING

If you want to study and you know that you are feeling sleepy, simply just drop the book down, stand up, walk around, do a little exercise like stretching, running for a while or jumping. Have a cup of coffee or cold water. Or you can pick up the book and read while you are walking.

 

If that suggestion didn’t work, you can go to sleep, but set up an alarm for maybe and let it wake you up.

Sometimes, reading with an earpiece in your ear can help you overcome the urge to sleep. But at times it can be distracting, you can reduce the volume at least you won’t fall asleep. Also jotting down some points while reading, keeps you awake.
